Backwall Return Flange vs Three-Side Flange – Which One Do You Need?

The DUFR Series is available in two flange configurations:

• Three-Side Return Flange – Fits against the back wall and both side walls. Ideal for wall-to-wall installations where the drain spans the full width of the shower and is fully enclosed on three sides. For 1/8" to 3/8" thick wall tiles.
• Backwall Return Flange Only – Installs directly against the back wall without return flanges on the ends. The drain runs along the back wall but does not need to extend from one side wall to the other, making it ideal for curbed or curbless showers where the drain is positioned against the back wall with open space at the ends. For 1/8" to 3/8" thick wall tiles.

How do I get rid of the tile strip between my shower drain and the wall?

A typical linear shower drain is installed several inches away from the back wall, leaving a strip of tile that must be cut and finished separately. This can create an awkward transition and add extra tile installation work. The DUFR-TF Series installs directly against the back wall and both side walls, eliminating the extra tile strips and creating a seamless wall-to-wall shower floor.

I need the drain right up against my shower bench. Which version do I need?

It depends on the bench. If the bench runs the full width of the shower between both side walls, the front of the bench acts as the back wall, and this three-side version installs flush against it and both side walls with no tile gap. If the bench has open space at either end, choose the Backwall Return Flange Only version. Either way, the bench must be framed so the drain can be secured to the studs.

Does this drain need to touch both side walls?

Yes. The three-side return flange is designed for wall-to-wall installations. It fits against the back wall and both side walls, so the drain needs to span the full width of the shower with walls on both ends. If your shower does not have walls on both sides, the Backwall Return Flange Only option may be the better fit.

How do I choose the right size linear shower drain?

Measure your rough opening between the finish faces of the framing (stud to stud), not the finished tile opening. The visible grate will be approximately 2" shorter than the total drain length you order.

Will this drain work with my shower waterproofing membrane (Schluter, Laticrete, etc.)?

Yes. The DUFR-TF Series is designed to work with both sheet waterproofing systems like Schluter Kerdi and liquid waterproofing like Laticrete Hydroban. It is also compatible with other major systems, including Blanke Aqua-Shield and Mapei. The textured bonding flange creates a tight membrane seal to the drain body.

My shower is a non-standard size. Can I get a custom linear drain?
